African Americans and Skiing: Breaking Stereotypes, Building Community
Hi, I’m Desta Lewis, CEO of The Black Powder Movement, and a proud member of the NBS Southern Snow Seekers Ski Club here in Atlanta. I’ve been skiing for years, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had someone raise an eyebrow and say, “Wait, Black people ski?” Yes, we absolutely do—and we’ve been doing it for decades!
If you’ve ever been curious about skiing or snowboarding but thought it wasn’t “for us,” let me tell you, it’s time to flip the script. Not only do we ski, but we also bring our own unique culture, energy, and community to the slopes. Let’s talk about how skiing can be a space for you, your friends, and your family.
A Rich History of Black Skiers
You might not know this, but African Americans have a long history in winter sports. The National Brotherhood of Snow Sports (NBS) was founded in 1973 and has grown to include over 50 clubs across the U.S. It’s the largest organization of Black skiers and snowboarders in the world. The NBS has two missions: to promote winter sports among African Americans and to support aspiring Black Olympic athletes.
Organizations like the NBS have created spaces where we feel welcomed and celebrated. When you join an NBS-affiliated ski club, like the Southern Snow Seekers, you’re not just signing up for ski trips—you’re joining a family that shares a love for the slopes and for each other.
Why Skiing? It’s More Than Just Snow
Skiing isn’t just about gliding down a mountain. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone, experiencing nature in a whole new way, and building lifelong memories. Here’s why you might love it:
-
It’s a Fun Challenge: The first time you get on skis might feel intimidating, but trust me, there’s nothing like that moment when you nail your first run.
-
Beautiful Scenery: Imagine standing on top of a snow-covered mountain, taking in breathtaking views. The mountains are pure magic.
-
A Great Workout: Skiing and snowboarding are excellent for your core, legs, and cardio. Plus, it’s so fun you won’t even realize you’re working out.
-
Community Vibes: The camaraderie on ski trips is unmatched. After a day on the slopes, there’s nothing better than gathering with friends for après-ski fun.
What to Expect on the Slopes
If you’re new to skiing, don’t worry—we all start somewhere. Most resorts offer lessons for beginners, and trust me, everyone falls at first (it’s part of the fun!). Here are a few tips:
- Dress Warm: Layer up with water-resistant gear and don’t forget gloves, goggles, and a good hat.
- Take a Lesson: Professional instructors make all the difference.
- Start Small: Stick to the bunny slopes until you feel comfortable.
- Have Fun: It’s not about being perfect; it’s about enjoying yourself.
You’re Not Alone
One of the best things about skiing as part of a group like the NBS is knowing you’re not alone. It’s inspiring to see other Black skiers and boarders shredding the slopes, and it’s a reminder that we belong everywhere—even on snow-covered mountains.
And the trips? Oh, the trips! NBS clubs host events at some of the best resorts in the world. From the annual Summit, which brings together thousands of Black skiers and boarders, to smaller local trips, there’s something for everyone.
